Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec

Client: Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec

Project description

The Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec underwent a major expansion in 2010 with the addition of the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion, increasing its surface area by 89%. The new 14,900 m² building has five floors, three galleries, functional spaces, a café, an amphitheatre and rental space, transforming the 83-year-old institution into a modern art gallery. With this expansion, the museum has strengthened its artistic mission, and now hosts national and international exhibitions, and showcases works that were previously in storage.

The BPA project stands out for its commitment to sustainability and flexibility and its remarkable overall efficiency, surpassing the benchmark by 34%. It generates an annual reduction of over 1,948 tons of GHG emissions, resulting in 25% energy savings compared to similar buildings.

The facility incorporates high-performance mechanical systems, with low-temperature heating, heat recovery with a heat wheel and optimized air conditioning. It also features systems for meticulous humidity and temperature control to preserve the artwork and maintain optimal conditions even during power outages.

The project was awarded LEED-NC Silver certification.
