Project description
The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) is the first mass timber hospital in North America. This 100,000 ft² project was designed to support future vertical expansion without requiring major structural reinforcement. Mass timber was selected for its exceptionally low carbon footprint, as well as its benefits for patient well-being, fire safety, and the reduction of surface-borne infection risks.

- Spanning 9,290 m², it has redefined healthcare infrastructure.
- It features an innovative, high-performance mass-timber superstructure designed to support an additional storey across most of the building, and its biophilic timber design enhances patients’ well-being and recovery.
- The hospital greatly lowers its carbon footprint through the use of mass timber, geothermal energy, high-performance glazing, and innovative distribution systems, all supporting a sustainable building.
- The construction process was optimized by combining rapid assembly with proven fire safety measures.
