Client: Sheridan College

Project presentation

For this $1M project, BPA’s Edmonton-based engineers provided mechanical consulting services, working alongside the electrical contractor and the project team from Sheridan College in Oakville, ON. The College was looking to augment their Alternative Energy curriculum, while supporting the energy needs of their growing campus. BPA was asked to provide a turn-key CHP, within the scope of a fixed fee, design-build contract for a new Building Trades Centre for Excellence.

Designs were integrated into a full-building systems model to ensure coordination of components. This tri-generation system:

  • Includes two 265kW CHP units coupled with two low-temperature absorption chillers.
  • Operates in island mode to provide power, heat and cooling for the district energy plant.

Features:

  • Each unit is housed inside the Energy Centre in an acoustic enclosure allowing teaching to occur during full operation.
  • The system can provide 520kW of electrical power and 860kW of thermal energy, with 90 tons of connected absorption refrigeration.
