RTFT – New 25 kV Electrical Entrance

Client: Rio Tinto, Fer and Titane (RTFT)

Project presentation

The construction of a new 25 kV electrical inlet and a new 4.16 kV line has made it possible to supply a new substation for the new process at Rio Tinto’s Sorel plant. Thanks to this modernization, the plant can now operate with increased energy efficiency, supporting more sustainable and reliable production.

With the existing electrical entrance to one section of the plant obsolete and no longer meeting current standards, and with several obsolete pieces of equipment to be dismantled, a number of challenges had to be overcome to avoid prolonged interruptions to plant operations. It was therefore necessary to install a mix of new and used equipment to ensure the continuity of operations. Supply logistics was one of the critical aspects of this project. Thanks to close coordination with Hydro-Québec, we were able to accelerate the schedule, and ensure that the design took into account the proximity of an existing 230 kV line.
