Characteristics and Impacts
The roof membrane reduces the heat island effect and the capacity of HVAC equipment. Exterior lighting is designed to avoid illuminating the sky, while interior lighting uses presence detectors. Other efficiency measures include heat recovery, air economizers, CO2 and NOx sensors, variable-torque and variable-frequency drives, control systems that optimize equipment operation, air conditioning with energy recovery, ventilation for the car wash and electric charging stations for vehicles. DDC control with visual display is performed remotely from the Montreal facilities.
The plumbing equipment installed is low consumption, generating savings of 40% in drinking water. The building consumes 25% less energy than the CMNÉB (National Energy Code for Buildings).
The Wabush branch is the first Hewitt Equipment branch to be certified LEED NC-2009 (certified level).
