Dual Energy Inukjuak – Innavik Hydro – Nunavik
Client: Nunavik Housing Bureau
Project presentation
As part of the energy transition, the northern village of Inukjuak and Innergex formed a partnership (Innavik) to build Nunavik’s very first hydroelectric power station. A major project to transform the community’s heating systems was launched. Over 300 buildings were targeted for conversion.

Characteristics and Impacts
The new heating and domestic hot water systems use a much more economical, clean energy source.
- BPA designed an independent heating system, which allowed Hydro-Quebec to use either an oil-fired or an electric system, depending on energy availability.
- The systems were designed to be compact and optimized, avoiding the need to expand existing mechanical rooms.
- Profits generated by the plant will be used for economic development, community education and training, and social and traditional programs.
- A real partnership with the community was created.
