Location: To develop a new team in Toronto and to continue to help the Ottawa and Montréal team.

Reporting directly to the Vice-President: Structural, we are looking for dynamic people who want to participate in the development and growth of our Toronto Office.  This position will also offer the incumbent the ability to collaborate on large- and small-scale projects in other major markets such as Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Western Canada.  More importantly, we are looking for the future Leaders of our Toronto Office; those who want to help us create our identity, expand our brand, and grow a team that is built on excellence, integrity, and a passion for structural engineering.

Your main responsibilities

This position is responsible for, both directly and through the Team Leader the provision of services to clients with a focus on both engineering and the management of projects.  As such, the incumbent requires the proven technical and management expertise to independently complete and certify project, work in cooperation with other level engineers, field personnel, and technicians, and work in cooperation with the Team Leader. We’re looking for somebody dynamic who wants to participate in the creation of a new team in our new Toronto office and who will report directly to the Vice President.

  • Project design engineer working in cooperation with project selected lead, engineering, and technical staff to successfully complete assigned projects.
  • Assist Team Leaders in the training of junior and intermediate staff.
  • Make independent decisions on project work methods and procedures in collaboration with Senior Staff and Project Leads.
  • Devise practical and economical solutions to project problems in cooperation with Team Leaders.
  • Give technical guidance to Junior Engineers or technicians assigned to work on a common project.
  • Take courses of action necessary to expedite the successful completion of assigned projects.
  • In collaboration with the Vice-President: Structural, build, develop, and maintain client relationships, identify new business opportunities.

In collaboration with the Team Lead, work as a Project Engineer on projects of varying size & scope. Project responsibilities to include:

  • Complete the preliminary and detailed design of building construction projects in the areas of hospitals, laboratories, commercial, residential, mission-critical, condominium, retirement, and office occupancies.
  • Undertake the development of detailed engineering contract drawings and specifications for the various projects with the assistance of highly experienced CAD and administrative support staff.
  • Perform detailed design calculations for a variety of construction materials including concrete, steel, masonry, wood, and light-gage metal.
  • Utilize state of the art engineering programs in the design and analysis process including: ETABS, SCONC, STAAD-Pro, SAFE, spSLAB, and Woodworks
  • Prepare reports and perform investigations (for both studies and pre-design surveys).
  • Perform detailed seismic/gravity and building condition assessments of existing buildings, including the development of upgrading and renovation recommendations, reports, details, and construction documentation.
  • Participation in project specific short- and long-term planning.
  • Participation in project scheduling and budgeting.
  • Participation in consultant team project meetings and design sessions.

Your profile :

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Structural (Civil) Engineering
  • Licensed Engineer under the Terms and Conditions of the PEO
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in the design/engineering/construction of full buildings and their components utilizing the Ontario Building Code and/or National Building Code. Experience (and/or training) to include work in multistory construction and projects utilizing structural steel, cast-in-place concrete (flat slab & wall), and wood, including 2 years of supervised training on the management of individual projects.
  • Self Starter. Able to work with minimal direction, but, more importantly able to work in a team environment.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering programs including: ETABS, SCONC, STAAD-Pro, SAFE, and spSLAB.  Working knowledge of REVIT and AutoCAD.
  • Candidates must have experience designing structural steel, cast-in-place concrete, and wood building structures utilizing Canadian building codes.
  • Must be able to develop engineering drawings, sketches, and markups.
  • Extensive knowledge of structural engineering processes and technical concepts including all applicable building codes and standards.
  • Project and time management skills and ability to deliver projects on time to the satisfaction of the customer.
  • Possesses a strong balance of technical and people skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop design drawings and sketches.
  • Construction project experience including the preparation of construction documents, tender processes, and field documentation.
  • Strong commitment to professional and customer service excellence.
  • Ability to deliver customer solutions (ability to critically assess customer situation and present solutions).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong customer-facing capabilities skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills (e.g. can coordinate diverse set of resources for multiple clients).
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to communicate technical subject matter in business terms.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
